IMPACT MANDATE VERIFICATION
We assess the robustness of an investor’s impact thesis according to industry standards.
Our Approach
We assess each impact thesis against these three key characteristics:
Clarity
The clarity of the impact thesis, investor contribution narrative, and underlying assumptions
Evidence
The extent to which the thesis and underlying assumptions are supported with evidence
Alignment
The alignment of the impact objectives and metrics with widely accepted goals and standards (e.g., SDGs, IRIS+)
Based on this approach, we provide a detailed report of our findings and recommendations for internal use and a summary report that can be shared externally.
The BlueMark Value-Add
We recommend improvements for a clear, evidence-based impact thesis aligned with industry standards, thereby helping clients more accurately and confidently communicate their impact mandate and strategy to the market.
The Types of Clients We Serve
We serve a variety of impact investors, including asset managers, asset allocators, and companies. Among asset managers, demand for this service tends to come from first-time fund managers (i.e., those with less than a three-year track record), established fund managers launching their first impact funds, and directly from limited partners in those funds.
The Best Timing for Client Verification
An impact mandate verification tends to be most relevant early in an impact investor’s journey, either during the fund formation stage or around the time of the fund launch. In some cases, we also conduct verifications for the re-capitalization of existing impact funds to ensure that impact considerations are still central to the strategy.
The Industry Standards We Use for Verification
We draw on a variety of impact investing industry standards, depending on the particular type of client and their particular thesis, investment strategy, and asset class. These standards include but are not limited to:
- Impact Management Project (IMP)
- The GIIN’s IRIS+ impact measurement framework
- Operating Principles for Impact Management (OPIM)
- Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
